5 people in Crandon, Wisconsin are dead after a local law enforcement employee went on a shooting rampage. Unconfirmed reports state that the suspect is a part time police officer with the Crandon Police Department. Asked whether the suspect was alive or dead, Crandon Police Chief John Dennee stated, “We’re not looking for anybody any more.”

For a city with only about 2,000 people, the 5 person killing “wipes out” a quarter of a percent of the entire population. On a more human note, the city is the size of a high school in most large suburban areas and the community is certainly tightly knit.

The victims were apparently high school students and recent grads including the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Asked to describe the suspect who was also a classmate of Karly Johnson, she explained, “He was nice. He was an average guy. Normal. You wouldn’t think he could do that.”

So why does our world seem to becoming more and more saturated with the senseless acts of violence? Are they merely being reported more? Is the proliferation of the Internet allowing for a larger spread of violence related news? Or is their a fundamental shift in culture and values that are driving people to insanity?

Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley refused to comment. Crandon, Wisconsin is 225 miles north of Milwaukee and is known for fishing, logging, hunting and snowmobiling.
